While I’m not a wedding expert, I’ve certainly been to my fair share. When I saw that my partner’s cousin was getting married in Mexico and requested black tie attire, I lowkey panicked. Um…what do you wear to a black tie destination event? TikTok, Instagram and the internet had a lot to say. Problem was, it was a series of mixed messages. Uncover the secret to putting together a flawless black tie or formal wedding guest wardrobe!
What Defines a Black Tie Dress?
Specialty Fabrics and Length: Think satin, silk, sequins, or taffeta. The dress should be luxurious and hit the floor.
Color Flexibility: Color doesn’t matter as much – it’s not required to be black, just avoid pure white (unless it’s a special exception, more on that later!).
Subtle Accessories: Keep it demure, ladies! A nice set of earrings and a small bag can really elevate your look.
Coordinated Look: Match your shoes to your dress for a cohesive, polished outfit.
My Black Tie Finds for Destination Events
Event 1: White Party
- Memoriesea Women’s Sexy One Shoulder High Split Cocktail Wedding Party Maxi Dress
- Pretty, my mom really liked this on me, but it felt too tight, my entire back was out, and the slit was too high. I didn’t feel comfortable.
- PRETTYGARDEN Women’s Summer Long Formal Wedding Guest Dress Sleeveless Ruffle Cocktail Party Maxi Bodycon Dresses
- Looked too cheap, other colors might be better!
- The A&F Julia Slip Strapless Scarf Maxi Dress
- This dress bunched around the underarms and bust but I love the option to have dresses in tall lengths. Everything is SO short these days. I’ve never really been a micromini girl. This dress looked amazing on someone else at the party who is petite.
- Scarf Slip Mini Dress (Winner!)
- I felt so gorgeous in this dress, it had a classic, flattering shape with the trendy, yet vintage scarf. Chef’s kiss.

Event 2: Wedding + Reception
Once I was at the venue, I saw the dresses really ran the gamut. There was lots of color, fun sequins, metallic, and even some sorter dresses. Attending a destination wedding does open things up a little from the more traditional black tie.
- Alex Olive Green Asymmetrical Maxi Dress
- Whew, I had high hopes with this one, but it ran very small – maybe bridal sizing. I’d size up, or take advantage of their custom sizing.
- Elegant Pick Navy Blue Floral Sleeveless Bustier Maxi Dress
- Looked luxurious, and a great length if you’re on the taller end. I agree with other reviewers in noting that the bust runs small compared to the purchased size. Ended up returning.
- Elaborate Charm Olive Green Satin Pleated Backless Maxi Dress
- Wanted to love this dress so much, it’s a lovely material. It just wasn’t flattering in the bust, and seemed too big.
- Forever Glam Emerald Green Sequin Mermaid Maxi Dress (Winner!)
- So obsessed – this dress is universally flattering, and brings a wow factor needed for a black tie event at a great price point. The back is so stunning! I wore this to the Mexico wedding and was comfortable all night.
- Timeless Poise Black Rhinestone Square Neck Backless Maxi Dress (Winner!)
- I loved this option so much I wore it for a black tie optional wedding last week! Simple, stretchy and figure flattering.

Shoes & Accessories That Elevate Your Look
- I swear by these Loeffler Randall block heels. They do make my feet swell after a long event, but the sparkle is insane and they go with everything. Endless compliments whenever I wear these.
- This darling pearlized clutch reminded me of the ocean so you know I had to purchase it immediately. I also bought some pearl earrings to match.
- I also love this clutch as a silver option, which I used for the second wedding. It’s large enough for makeup, credit cards and your phone, which is a huge plus.
