Day two of our California coast road trip brought us the sweetest cabin in the woods of Big Sur, surrounded by towering redwoods and breathtaking coastal views along Highway 1.
After a relaxing morning with a complimentary hotel breakfast, we took our time exploring downtown San Luis Obispo (SLO). This quaint town has a little bit of everything—cute cafés, unique trade shops, and even a Sephora for a quick beauty haul.
As a bakery lover, the first stop of the day was at Proof & Gather ($) for some bread, which was delicious. After window shopping for a bit, we decided it was best to hit the road for the 3 hour trip to our campground in Big Sur.
While mudslides continue to impact travel in and around the PCH, in the future you will be able to experience the wonder of the cliffs and ocean along the way.
🚗 Travel Tip #1: If you see cars parked at a scenic lookout, and it’s safe to pull over—do it! Even if you skip the iconic Bixby Bridge, there are plenty of spontaneous viewpoints that will take your breath away.

I left the campground selection to Mr. Big Sis, as he takes great pride in his outdoorsiness. My only request was for access to hot water and showers. Girlies, why did he understand the assignment!!?

As soon as we pulled up at Riverside Campground & Cabins and got our keys, we exhaled. Families and campers with RV’s were sprinkled along the site, and kids played in a small ravine while the cool mountain air kissed our skin. Our cell phones didn’t even have wifi – it was pure bliss. While I pulled out a book I couldn’t help but wonder, was I made for tiny home living? Nothing but the forest and a small set of belongings to keep me comfortable? It was fun to consider the possibilities and feel connected to things that felt deeply rooted in how humans have existed for millenia.
If you’re planning a trip to Big Sur, keep in mind that accommodations can be pricey and book up fast.
💡 Tip #2: Book your stay 6-8 months in advance to secure a good deal, especially if you’re eyeing a campsite or budget-friendly stay.

💰 Budget Friendly
-
Any local tent campsite – the most cost effective for those who have the appropriate equipment.
-
Riverside Campground & Cabins – Rustic yet comfortable cabins, we picked cabin 9 and it was perfect for our short stay. There is a camp store for anything from hoodies to s’mores supplies and the restrooms were relatively clean and warm.
-
Big Sur River Inn – Affordable dining + great location. Our proximity to The Restaurant was so convenient we went there for dinner two nights in a row!
💳 Mid-Range
-
Big Sur Lodge – Cozy lodge nestled in the redwoods.
-
Glen Oaks Big Sur – Stylish, modern cabins.
💎 Luxury Stay
-
Alila Ventana Big Sur – A dreamy (but pricey) resort that books up a year in advance!
